FILOPAPPOU HILL: BLACK BOX 2001
project by Zacharias Michalis and Koen Elias

|
Filopappou Hill: The hill was named after the burial monument of Filopappos Gaios Julius Adiochos. Constructed in 114-116AC. The monument is located Southwest of the Acropolis. Small phrases describe the surrounding space and the greater city area. The sound structure is extracted out of a logical procedure and ratiocination. The phrases have been created / edited / mixed as a result of observation in situ, taking the form of announcements. The final object presented in the open space exhibition is in general a black box announcing information randomly. Thus the object is forming a platform were information is transmited. The current project
can be divided in two parts, the visible object and the sound object.
The second part, which is the main interest, is focused on the sound because of the spatial movement of sound and also because of the site itself (An old marble excavation site, which is shaped in a amphitheatric way.)
Sound functions similar
to the light and expands throughout space, reaching the viewer / listener.
(Both light and sound have the form of a wave.) Sound refers to the ear
organ instead of the eye.
