FILOPAPPOU HILL: BLACK BOX 2001

project by Zacharias Michalis and Koen Elias

Filopappou Hill: The hill was named after the burial monument of Filopappos Gaios Julius Adiochos. Constructed in 114-116AC. The monument is located Southwest of the Acropolis.

Small phrases describe the surrounding space and the greater city area. The sound structure is extracted out of a logical procedure and ratiocination. The phrases have been created / edited / mixed as a result of observation in situ, taking the form of announcements. The final object presented in the open space exhibition is in general a black box announcing information randomly. Thus the object is forming a platform were information is transmited.

The current project can be divided in two parts, the visible object and the sound object.
We needed a form with no references of any style, functioning as a loudspeaker and at the same time as a neutral aesthetic object. Turning out to be a monolithic construction that is in visual contrast with either an anti-monument or a monument structure.

The second part, which is the main interest, is focused on the sound because of the spatial movement of sound and also because of the site itself (An old marble excavation site, which is shaped in a amphitheatric way.)

Sound properties / Sound Sculpture

Sound functions similar to the light and expands throughout space, reaching the viewer / listener. (Both light and sound have the form of a wave.) Sound refers to the ear organ instead of the eye.
… I may not notice what I hear but I can't stop hearing.
The sound source may not always be visible or noticeable.

"…
Site Specific
Here the "sculpture" is conceived with the site in mind, the site sets the parameters and is, in part, the reason for the sculpture. This process takes the initial step towards sculpture's being integrated into its surroundings. But our process of recognition and understanding of the "work of art" is still keyed (referenced) to the oeuvre of the artist. Familiarity with his or her history, lineage, art intent , style, materials, techniques etc are presupposed;…

Site conditioned /determined.
Here the sculpure response draws all of its cues (reasons for being) from its surroundings. Thus requires the pro\cess to begin with an intimate, handson reading of the site…. "
